Summary

The enabling works for the ABP new building began in August 2012. The enabling works were performed to prepare and secure the building site for the construction of the new building and occured prior to the demolition of the existing architecture building. It included site preparation, creation of access routes, installation of security fencing, ramps, and placing of signs. The enabling works ensure that construction teams and materials can enter a site and work safely and efficiently, and that adjacent buildings and infrastructure remain functional, safe and unimpeded.

The preparation for the site included the relocation (decant) of existing structures, and refurbishment of facilities to accommodate ABP staff and students for the duration of the new building construction. Trenching for communication cabling, new sewer pipework, harvesting and relocation of trees and other plants, and road works were carried out. A major part of the relocation were the dismantling and preservation of the Japanese Room, the relocation of the Wunderlich Gallery to the basement of 757 Swanston Street, and the Architecture Library to the Eastern Resource Centre. The Joseph Reed bank facade on the Old Commerce building received scaffolding and builder's sheds were installed on the Concrete Lawn. Hoarding around the site was erected in late November 2012.
